Back to School Promotion
(Author: Readers Are Leaders | July 16, 2009)

It’s that time of year again, and to help our students with getting ready for the school year we’re offering a “Back to School Program.”

This program will provide students with a review of the topics they covered from their previous year, with a natural transition into the new content that they will face; ensuring they succeed in achieving their goals for the year.

We take pride in assessing our students weaknesses and being able to teach them while complimenting their strengths. We build individualized programs for each of our students, to ensure that our students are able to not only attain but surpass their goals.

The program is four (4) weeks in length, with the option to choose the number of sessions per week. As with all our programs, a free academic assessment is included with registration.

High School Students having issues with Reading, Math and Sciences
(Author: Readers Are Leaders | July 1, 2009)

HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Many public schools are teaching the core subjects in such a way that many graduates cannot be placed in entry-level college or university classes because they do not have a grasp of the basics, according to education experts and professors.

College Math and English professors say there is a gap between what is taught in the province's high schools and what is needed in college. Many schools have de-emphasized drilling students in basic math, such as multiplication and division, they say.

"We have hordes of students who come in and have forgotten their basic arithmetic," said Donna McKusick, dean for developmental education at a local Community College. “College professors say students are taught too early to rely on calculators.”

This also affects many high-school students that are unprepared for the complex reading and writing tasks they'll encounter, according to a study, "Reading Between the Lines: What the ACT Reveals About College Readiness in Reading." This is a paper completed by ACT, the company known for its college-entrance exams, all over North America. The study found that just 51% of test-takers who were planning on higher education met the ACT "college-readiness benchmark in reading" which represents a level of skill required to have a high probability of success in college courses.

Professional Recommendations
“Between 2002 and 2012, the need for remedial education teachers is expected to increase faster than the average; as employers are increasingly demanding a more literate workforce. The demand for ESL teachers will be particularly high because of a growing immigrant population that needs the ability to speak English effectively.”

How Readers Are Leaders can help
Here at Readers Are Leaders we ensure that we have the best teachers who are trained to tailor their classes to a wide range of different learning styles; usually involving individual, small-group, and large-group sessions.

We take care to assess each student's individual proficiency level and then create a plan for that student's learning. From time to time during the classes, our teachers will re-evaluate the progress of individual students and may modify their learning plan as needed.

Our teachers help many students acquire the study skills necessary to complete the work assigned in each class. They also strive to help each student improve their self-confidence throughout the course of the program.

Most students are unprepared for College
(Author: Readers Are Leaders | May 20, 2009)

Only one quarter of high school students who take the standard number of college prep courses are prepared for their first year of college or an entry-level job, says a recent study by ACT, providers of the North America wide college entrance exam.

The reason is twofold: more than half of the states in this country don’t require students to take specific core curriculum courses in math or science in order to graduate, and the quality of these courses is poor. “Ideally, the standards should delineate what students ought to know and be able to do in their high school courses in each subject area so that students have a solid foundation on which to begin the next course,” the report says.

The study looked at students at nearly 400 high schools nationwide who took the ACT last year and found that high school graduates who took the basic core curriculum college prep courses—four years of English and three each of math, science, and social studies—were unprepared for college.

Those who took more than the recommended core classes were slightly more prepared. But only 75 percent of those who took “substantial numbers of additional courses” were ready for their first year of college.

Professional Recommendations
And that’s where Professional Tutors come in. “It’s very important for [high school] media specialists to collaborate with teachers on the curriculum and with teachers in the classroom” to help reverse this negative trend.
